Synopsis:

Four years ago, crime beat reporter Riley O’Rourke changed the world. To be fair, it wasn’t entirely her fault.

Her mentor, a 3,000-year-old vampire, destroyed Tucson police headquarters during a fight with a sorcerer. Footage of the fight went viral on the internet, and the existence of Preternaturals—vampires, witches, and other were-animals like Riley—was revealed. Humans went a little crazy. The Cats—and Wolves—were out of the bag, and only an act of Congress stopped the chaos.

But not all the Preternaturals are happy with this new world order, however. The Queen of the Winter Faeries worries that exposing her hidden world will destroy it, and sends the nastiest storybook characters imaginable to kill Riley before she can out the Fair Folk, too.

The Summer Queen, Winter’s arch-rival, promises to protect Riley if she does her a teeny-weeny favor: break into Winter’s castle, sneak past creatures straight out of Riley’s nightmares, steal a magical mirror, and return it to Summer. All without Winter noticing.

Riley agrees to the favor—what choice does she have? But dealing with the Fae is always a double-edged sword, and the Summer Queen neglected to explain that if Riley successfully pulls off this heist, the entire world might end up on the edge of destruction.

About the Author:

Picture
Fiona Skye is a fantasy novelist currently living in the deserts of Southern Arizona. She shares a home with her husband, two kids, three cats, and a Border Collie.

Fiona's passion for story telling began early in life. At age twelve, she wrote her first short story, which was based on a song by White Lion, a 1980s hair band. She has dedicated her life since then to writing, only to be occasionally distracted by her insatiable love of yarn and crochet and the dogged pursuit of the perfect plate of cheese enchiladas.

She counts Diana Gabaldon and Jim Butcher as her favorite authors and biggest influences. Joining these two on the list of people she would wait in queue for a week to have a coffee with are Neil Peart, Kevin Hearne, and Brandon Sanderson.

Synopsis

Perfection is an illusion fueled by the perception of others.
***
Tweet was my heart, my soul, and my purpose.

She was my everything.

Neither of us were perfect. We both made mistakes. Looking back, that was okay, because every choice brought us to where we needed to be at the time we needed to be there. The one constant, our love and friendship.

There are two sides to every story and I wouldn’t trade our sides for anything in the world.

Excerpt

A large hand came down and landed on my shoulder, causing my umpteenth beer to slosh over the sides of the red cup. “What the fuck?”

I bounced slightly when Travis plopped down on the sofa next to me. “Hey buddeeey. How’s my buddeeey?” he slurred, sliding his upper body along the back of the sofa closer to me.

I glanced over and threw him a lazy smirk.

With a cocked eyebrow and lopsided grin, he informed me, “I gotta surprise that’s gonna make that smile and other parts of you grow bigger.”

“You’re making me really uncomfortable,” I said, leaning away.

“There are two lovelies that want to spend time with our pulsating masculinity. Their names are Heather and Melanie.”

Travis’s head flopped to the side, his gaze and wave aimed at a cute blonde and brunette standing across the room.

“They’re all yours, buddy. I’m not in the mood.” I downed more of my beer.

His head rolled back toward me. “Heather won’t leave Melanie. They travel in pairs. I want to get my hands on Heather’s pair, so you get in the mood.”

“I’m sure your immense charm will pry her away.”

“Come on. Be a friend.”

“Sorry, not tonight.”

Glaring at me, he bit out, “Not tonight… then what fucking night? I’d like to put that date on my calendar so I can stop wasting my time.”

“What’s your problem?”

“You’re my problem. You and this pussy-whipped, no balls, coochie slave attitude you’ve been sporting around for months instead of a rock-hard dick.”

“Fuck you! You don’t understand.”

I pushed off the sofa, stumbling a few steps toward the back door. I needed some air and to get away from Travis’s bullshit. The room spun, and then I spun as Travis grabbed my upper arm, turning me to face him.

“I understand. You’ve been hung up on this fucking girl ever since I’ve known you.”

My fingers curled into fists as I got in his face and snarled, “Don’t you ever refer to her as this fucking girl.”

Travis took a step back, ran his hands over his face, and huffed in frustration. “What’s the deal? I thought I was finally getting my friend back. You see her for like two seconds today and it sends you into a fucking tailspin. You gotta get past this.”

I could see the sincerity in his eyes. He wasn’t telling me these things in anger or because he didn’t like Tweet. He knew I was in a constant struggle and he was being a friend.

“I’m trying,” I whispered.

“Try harder, dude.”

“I don’t know how.” It was pathetic how weak and defeated my voice sounded.

After seeing Tweet earlier, the rest of the day had been spent replaying the few seconds encounter over and over in my head. She looked incredible except for the sadness in her eyes. A pang of guilt pinched my stomach because I was glad to see that sadness. It meant she was as miserable as I was. She disappeared in a flash but I didn’t need a lot of time in order to take her all in. Her hair was that summer mixture of dark brown and gold. The light sprinkle of red across her nose and cheeks was either a result of being at the beach or seeing me. I hoped it was the latter. She had on a plain white tank top and a pair of black shorts that were molded to her adorable round ass. Tweet was the only girl I knew who could wear the plainest clothes, little makeup, and still look like a supermodel. The memory of her hips swaying back and forth as she darted away had my dick twitching. I turned from Travis and headed out the back door, needing that air more now than before.

Once outside, I propped myself up against the house, closed my eyes, and sucked in all the oxygen my lungs could handle.

I need to get her out of my head.

There were a few people hanging out around the pool so I concentrated on them. That was a dumbass move because most of them were hooking up. Sounds of kissing, moaning, giggling, and more moaning filled my ears. I shifted my attention to the sounds coming from inside the house. Another dumbass move. The only thing I could hear was the pounding music, which made me think of Tweet’s swaying hips, which made me think of grabbing those hips and pounding into… I had to get out of there.

As I shoved off of the wall, the back door swung open, Travis stepped out, and headed over toward me.

“It kills me to see you like this.” He paused, his eyes shifting from me to something over my shoulder. “I didn’t want to say anything because I don’t play into the rumor bullshit.”

“What are you talking about?”

His expression showed how much he was struggling with whether or not to continue. “I heard Amanda is hooking up with some guy.”

My brows scrunched together as my jaw went slack. A small chuckle of disbelief escaped me. “Why are you telling me this?”

“Because I care about you. You’re like a brother to me. Noah, stop pissing your life away waiting for something that’s not gonna happen.”

Glancing away, I shook my head, and said, “It’s a fucking lie.”

“How do you know?”

My eyes pierced his. “She wouldn’t do that.”

“Why not?”

“Because she’s my Tweet!” I screamed.

Out the corner of my eye, I could see the people around the pool unhooking from one another.

“She’s not your anything! When are you going to get that through your fucking head?!”

I lunged forward, landed both hands on Travis’s chest, and shoved. He stumbled back, but made no move to come after me.

“I’m not going to fight you, man.”

“Who’s the no-balls pussy now?!”

I shoved.

He stumbled back.

Party people scattered into the house.

“I’m sorry,” he said, his voice full of pity.

I shoved.

He stumbled back.

And then I tackled him to the ground.

I landed one hard punch to his jaw before he flipped me onto my back, wrapped his massive arm around my neck, and held me down. I jerked and twisted for several seconds trying to break free of his hold. Finally, the alcohol and pain took over and I gave up.

Pressing the heel of my hands into my eyes, I choked back tears, and mumbled, “We’ve shared all our firsts together.”

Synopsis:

Title: Mollywood (Carved Hearts #2)
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: October 27,2014

Cover Design: Wicked By Design

Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/22824702-mollywood

"A good chef can throw seemingly random ingredients into a pot and create something delicious. On rare occasions, fate does the same thing with hearts. With the right combination of elements at just the right time, a couple can fall head over heels in love. That being said, blending two lives can get messier than any kitchen and also a hell of a lot harder to clean up."

Molly's food truck took Austin by storm, and she's got more prospects than she knows what to do with. Her crazy ex is out of the picture, and she's moved in with her gorgeous boyfriend, Joe. She and Joe rarely see one another, and when they do, their time is squandered arguing. Molly's anxious to break this cycle because the tension between them is literally making her sick.

After years alone and shattered, Molly has reawakened a part of Joe that he was sure couldn't be revived. He's terrified of losing her, but their combined baggage makes every step forward seem littered with landmines. Molly's more than worth the fight, but she shouldn't be the one he's constantly battling. A master carpenter by trade, Joe has restored countless treasures which seemed beyond repair. He's determined that he and Molly won't be the exception.

Fate kicks in the door and rocks them to their very foundation. Boundaries are tested, tears shed, and Molly and Joe will question everything they think they know about themselves and each other.

Excerpt:

I found myself looking over at Joe’s perfect profile, and felt that familiar ache in my chest. Frustrated at our disjointed state and suddenly overwhelmed with emotion, I stopped in my tracks. Joe turned to face me, a perplexed expression marring his flawlessness. I placed my hands on both of his uncharacteristically smooth cheeks and looked him in the eye.

“I love you, Joe.” I felt my throat narrow painfully, and blinked away unexpected tears.

“I love you, too.” His frown deepened and he brushed my sweeping bangs away from my eyes. “What’s wrong, Molly?”

It was a good question and I wished I had a reasonable explanation. We’d come so far and been through so much, it seemed unfair that we couldn’t get it together long enough to enjoy any of it. I’d been wracking my brain for weeks to find the right thing to say, a verbal Band-Aid to slap over a hemorrhaging wound. It made me wish my love life could be as straightforward as my job.

A good chef can throw random ingredients into a pot and create something delicious. On rare occasions, fate does the same thing with hearts. With the right combination of elements at just the right time, a couple can fall head over heels in love. That being said, blending two lives can get messier than any kitchen and also a hell of a lot harder to clean up. I wasn’t usually such a bawl baby, but when it came to Joe, all bets were off. I was freaked out about “us” just then, and what we were becom- ing. I pulled his face down to meet mine and kissed his lips delicately, so he wouldn’t be covered in my lipstick all night.

“Let’s try to enjoy ourselves and talk about the ugly stuff afterwards. Okay?”

Blurb:

Four years ago, Tyler Karras' quest to avenge his wife's death led to all out war with San Francisco's Russian Mafia. With the Bratva's collapse and its king, Dmitri Chernov, long dead, all Ty wants now is to put it behind him and enjoy a second chance at life with his new bride, Hannah, and the child they're expecting any day.

But Chernov's heir, Grigory Dmitriev, has returned, bitter and determined. He wants his kingdom back, and he's more than willing to leverage Ty's new family to get it.

First he targets Conner, Ty's brooding nineteen-year-old stepson, manipulating the boy into a vortex of sex, drugs, alcohol, and gambling. Then he turns his sights on Hannah. At eight months pregnant, she's the ultimate bargaining chip. With both their lives in jeopardy, as well as his unborn child, Ty has little choice and must do as Grigory commands.

But Tyler swore he'd never kill again. He buried that monster four years ago and means to keep it that way. Grigory, however, makes that vow impossible to keep.

With his new family on the line, Ty will cross further into the dark side than he ever has before, challenging everything he believes about himself, and forcing him to face the ghosts of his past. Only then will Ty discover if he has the strength to do the unspeakable, to sacrifice his last chance at redemption and save the lives of those he loves most.

Excerpt:

Tyler:

The discomfort, as bothersome as it was, couldn’t chase away the unease that flittered through my stomach like butterflies. That feeling had become a permanent fixture in my core as of late, like there was all this extra room inside me now. I felt incomplete, half of me missing, and what remained couldn’t function on its own. It wasn’t an unfamiliar sensation. I’d been here before, and all the old habits and cravings associated with that came into sharp focus, while everything else pushed to the periphery and blurred.

I kept a small collection of liquor in the corner of my construction trailer, for those times when the client came by to celebrate the completion of a project or the granting of a long-embattled permit. I kept one bottle half-filled with water, my own little secret. No one ever questioned it. They all assumed it was vodka. But tonight, it stood empty, while the others danced temptingly before me like harem girls beckoning me to peek beneath their veils.

Come to me. I’ll help you forget. You know I can. I’ve done it so many times before. It doesn’t have to hurt anymore. Just take a drink, one small sip...

That voice clamored so loud, I couldn’t even remember pulling the stop from the decanter, or pouring the tequila into the stubby lowball glass. But there it was, my old friend, the amber devil, staring me in the eye after all this time.

How many times had I heeded its call, had I given in to the temptation to simply not feel? Because that was it, really, what brought me to this point, that pain, that loneliness, that undeniable knowledge that I had destroyed everything most precious in my life.

I feared that knowledge and ached to reject it in the quickest way possible. The amber devil had always granted me that wish, and oh, how I wanted it to yet again. For just one moment, just an hour, just this single evening. I wanted that drink. I needed that drink.

I peered down into the devil’s face and saw my past reflected back at me, all the weeks and months I’d spent drunk, scheming my vengeance, releasing my wrath against an innocent woman—Hannah. And then there was Nick, my troublesome little brother, who’d kept everything a secret in order to protect me. He’d sacrificed his life in our father’s name so that I might live.

And that pretty much summed it all up. I was half a man without Jill. I was half a man without Nick. And now, half a man without Hannah. What did that make me but a speck of humanity?

I tried to reconcile that with the man I once was, before I ever married Jill or Hannah. I relished my independence back then, which was why I’d tried so hard to disengage my brother from my life. I’d wanted to find out what it was like to be just me, on my own, with no one else to shape the boundaries of who or what I was. But over time, Nick and Jill had become enduring components in my life, and most certainly maneuvered the tools that cut and contoured the man I’d become.

After dealing with the crap that had consumed my world following their deaths, I thought I’d finally pulled myself together, and with Hannah a daily reminder of both my failings and my resurrection, I believed I’d come full circle. But no, I hadn’t. I was living, breathing proof you could never truly leave your past behind. It clung like a shadow, at times unseen, but never farther than my reach, always dark, forever uncontainable.

That’s what looked back up at me from that glass—that shadow.

My past.

Welcome Nancy S. Thompson! I’m excited to be a blog tour
stop today for Thompson’s Romantic Thriller, Leverage,
Book 2 in The Mistaken Series!
Picture
Nancy S. Thompson is the author of two dark romantic thrillers, The Mistaken, her debut, and Leverage, the sequel. She is a California transplant currently living in Seattle, Washington with her husband and son, their giant snow dog, Jack, and his kitty, Skye. Besides moonlighting as a freelance editor, she also has her own interior design business within the model home merchandising industry. When she's not writing, editing, or reading, Nancy keeps herself busy by cooking and baking.

What inspired you to write this series? Did you know when you started The Mistaken that it would be a series?

I didn’t even write The Mistaken thinking it would ever be a published book, so no, nothing was ever planned. Once I signed with my publisher for The Mistaken, I was inspired to continue the story in Leverage. I knew basically what I wanted the story to be about, but the ending didn’t reveal itself to me until I was right there, ready to commit it to paper, so to speak.

How long did it take you to write both stories and was there any particular research or experiences that played into their development?

The Mistaken took less than three months to write the first draft, with an additional year or so for revisions. I had a lot to learn about the craft. Leverage took me a year to write the first draft since I was bogged down in marketing for The Mistaken, but since I already knew so much more about the craft, it took far less to revise and polish. As for research, I did have to learn about the Russian Mafia, or Bratva as it’s called. I’d had a minor run-in years earlier with someone allied with the Bratva in San Francisco, and I never forgot how scared that left me, so I thought they’d make the perfect villain, but there was a lot I had to learn about them to make it believable.

Tell us a little bit about your characters Tyler and Hannah.

Tyler is a mix of my two favorite nationalities—English and Aussie. He’s always played by the rules and stayed within the lines, so when his life first goes haywire in The Mistaken, he’s shocked at how far he steps over into the dark side to gain the vengeance his heart craves. He later vows to never repeat it, but in Leverage, he’s pushed right back into the darkness and must choose redemption or to keep his family safe. He can’t have both.

Hannah is the hapless victim of mistaken identity who, in The Mistaken, refuses to go quietly, but comes to understand what drives Tyler and even chooses to help him. In Leverage, while she’s used against him, she believes so strongly in Tyler’s inherent goodness, she refuses to allow him to sacrifice himself on her behalf. Ty and Hannah would each give their lives to save the other.

Your characters go through some harrowing ordeals in both The Mistaken and Leverage. Did you find any scene or character difficult to write for either book? If so, how did you get through it?

The Mistaken was really tough in the most pivotal scene about a third of the way in. There’s a lot of me in that very violent scene, and that made it hard to write, but in the end, just writing it proved very cathartic and I was finally able to let my demons go. In Leverage, there’s a scene toward the end where Tyler tries to sever all ties with Hannah so he can do what he must to save his new family. I cried like a baby when I wrote that scene, because how do you say goodbye forever to the person you love most in the world?

Why romantic thrillers? Do you think you’ll ever write in a different genre?

I love romance, but there’s just not enough plot to most romance novels. In addition to a love story, I need a chase, a ticking clock, a threat to everything the characters most value. But I’m a bit different than most thriller writers. I don’t so mysteries or detective or police stories, and political conspiracies seem so far-fetched, so I stick to regular everyday people who are caught up in extraordinary circumstances. I need to think that anyone could find themselves in such a predicament. That’s what keeps it believable. No billionaires or bad-boy rock stars. Just an average guy and his girl stuck within an impossible situation. But I will say, I think I’m going to try to tackle a romance next, though, of course, it will have a lot of intrigue and danger. I just can’t not put my characters at risk.

Is there anything particular you want readers to take away from your books?

You mean besides a rip-roaring rollercoaster ride of thrills and emotional upheaval and turmoil? Well, sure! The Mistaken has a clear message or theme—forgiveness and accepting people for who and what they are, not what we want them to be.  And for Leverage, that’s a bit tougher. It’s really about putting those you love above yourself, risking your own redemption to ensure the safety of loved ones.

How do you balance your writing time with family, editing, design job, etc.?

I work for myself on all three jobs. I have my own design company and edit mostly for friends, so I can set my own schedule, though it does often take some juggling. As for family, my husband is very supportive of my writing career and just wants me to be happy and hopefully bring in a little extra spending money. My son is nineteen now, works full-time, and will graduate college this December. He pretty much has his own life and isn’t around much anyway. But we do make time to travel to see family and go to baseball games together.

What’s your writing process like?

I’m a plotter, so I write a complete outline first, which really is more of a handwritten first draft without setting or dialogue, a roadmap, if you will. Once that’s done, I sit down with it in front of me and just type away, go crazy adding in layers and details. Afterwards, I often read my own words and wonder how I came up with that. I sometimes don’t even remember writing it. Go figure!

Are there any books or authors that have influenced you in your writing? What are you reading right now?

I love John Hart. He’s won two Edgar Awards because his suspense novels are so full of rich, dramatic setting that read like characters in his stories. Lisa Regan is not just my best friend, she’s my idol and mentor. We met as critique partners and quickly became writing soul mates. Her debut, Finding Claire Fletcher, is one of my all-time favorite books. Ever. At the moment, I’m reading Malavita by another friend, Dana Delamar, who I met online via Facebook then in person at a meeting for the Eastside Romance Writers, a local chapter of the Romance Writers of America.

Why Indie publish?

The Mistaken was picked up by Sapphire Star Publishing, but the economy has been tough, and, while they remain in business, they closed to submissions. And since Leverage is the second in the series, it was unlikely any other publisher would want to take it on if they didn’t have the rights to The Mistaken, so I decided to self-publish Leverage. I figured, why not?  I was doing all the marketing for my debut myself anyway. What’s one more?

Do you have a favorite/least favorite step in the indie publishing process?

Yes, marketing and promoting.  I hate, hate, hate it.  I am not into self-promotion at all. I feel unqualified and feel weird tooting my own horn.

What can readers look forward to next?

I’m waffling over two very different ideas. One is on the provocative side and deals with an author who pens sexually explicit and somewhat irresponsible BDSM novels. She finds herself the object of a madman’s obsession, a man who thinks the women who write and read these novels actually invite violent sexual encounters. The other is more of straight romance, the story of a woman from the age of sixteen to thirty, and the three men who shape her heart and life—one her first love, the next a man who hurt her, and the last the love of her life. All three lives intersect in one volatile moment of love and hate, of jealousy and rage, of life and everlasting devotion.

(Just for fun questions)

1. Cats or dogs?

I love both, but I’ll have to pick dogs over cats.  Much more loyal.

2. Are you a homebody or adventurer?

Definitely an adventurer. I like to feel my heart pounding.

3. If you had to be one of your characters from your books–who would you choose? Why?

This might seem weird since he’s a guy, but I’d choose Tyler. He is such a damaged, conflicted soul, but he loves and lives fully.

4. Favorite TV or book character growing up?

I didn’t watch much TV as a kid, so I’d have to say it’s a toss-up between Ponyboy and Sodapop Curtis from SE Hinton’s novels, The Outsiders and That Was Then, This Is Now.

5. Favorite hobby that isn’t reading or writing?

If we’re talking everyday hobby, I’d say cooking and baking. I love to experiment and create new recipes.  But if you mean every once in a while, I’d have to say either snow skiing or white water rafting. I love a good adrenaline rush!

Beyond the Brothel Walls: Constricted - Coming in June by Rae Z. Ryans

Dark Dystopian Paranormal Romance

Blurb:

The world sundered and the demons arose, warring against those neither God nor Satan had wanted. Humanity ended. The Nephilim, Elioud, vampires, and witches inhabited the shards around the globe and rose in power, as the gates of Hell unleashed in the south. The world quickly lost technology and industry, as innovation and invention plummeted, and reverted to steam power and bio-fuel.

Korrigan trained most of her life as a courtesan, submitting to the will of men and caring for the other brothel inhabitants. Beyond the brothel walls of Hampshire House, lay a broken world torn deep into the final stages of Revelation. Beaten, used, and starved, all Korrigan understood were the rules her master enforced, and there was no escape, hope, or love for women in her situation. What she learned of the world around her wasn’t the reality.

Petre searched for the perfect woman to break his immortal curse.

Three hundred years ago, the young Baron witnessed his brother’s heinous crime. Petre’s family forced him to lie, thus spared his twin brother’s death and their family name. The warlock Hestin sought retribution, and his revenge transpired, hexing both brothers with immortality to atone for their sins. Cursed, the brothers roamed through life, slipping closer to their demonic sides, until he saw her.

Sold to Petre in Arcadia, Korrigan stumbled through her journey of love, treachery, and forgiveness. Secrets and lies whispered in the dark recesses of her mind as her past haunted her sleeping moments. What if all her master taught her proved to be wrong? The weight of her new world compounded on her shoulders. Torn between her heart and revenge, Korrigan hatched a plan to liberate the brothels and tear down the walls, but could she put her pride and wrath aside to save the one she loves?

Beyond the Brothel Walls Saga #1

Lust ruled the demons. Seven signs have come and gone. Sloth ruled the vampires. Seven angels fell to the Earth. Envy ruled the courtesans. Seven Keys lay hidden amongst the Seven Angels. Gluttony ruled the rich. Seven families rose and fell. Wrath ruled the Horsemen. One family would bring the world to its knees. Pride ruled the Morning Star. The Horsemen must seize the keys. Greed ruled the world.

Excerpt:

“Pardon, but do you mind if I sit with you?” His hand motioned towards the open bench opposite of me. “The train is rather full,” he added with the arc of his black brow.

“Sure.” My gaze did not falter. Saying no, was not an option. Instead, I further studied him from the glass reflection. This man existed far above my low station by more than class level. Even if he appeared my age, there were not any signs of a harsh life on his angular face. A curious scar etched into his cheek though, and I bet the disfigurement had made for a fascinating story.

“You don’t sound terribly sure, miss …”

“Charlotte.” I lied. My real name stood as another reminder of my former life with Jules. Korrigan, the Goddess of Prostitution, and a sacrifice to her included paid sexual acts. He’d reminded me every chance and never allowed me to shorten the terrible name. I crossed my legs and folded my hands over my knee. Maybe my new master would permit a nickname.

In his reflection, I watched as the stranger’s dark eyebrow rose. His eyes no longer reflected as black, but they appeared wrong, like they’d held too much emotion for someone as young. “You don’t look like a Charlotte.”

I bit the inside of my cheek to keep my eyes from rolling. Whoever looked like their name? Who could say they looked like this name or that name. I shrugged instead and stared out the window. The whistle blew again, and the engine’s hiss soothed me. The stranger made a tsking sound as he leaned forward and glanced out of the window. More flames licked at houses and trees.

“The fires are a real shame,” the stranger said.

After the oil had vanished –burned or pumped dry- humanity fell further into turmoil. The nuclear drought followed, caused by the shortages, and the sundered earthquakes swallowed the states one by one. Those earthquakes destroyed the majority of the eastern coalmines too. I’d watched on as the world around me collapsed. Trucks, cars, boats, and planes stopped across the country for years. Delphia –As they had called the former United States now- fell the hardest when the earthquakes had hit. Dams fractured knocking out hydropower. Food grew scarce when farmers could not operate equipment or transport goods. Riots started, and people looted, stealing and taking from their friends and neighbors. The news replayed the stories to this day.

The other continents fell, swallowed by the oceans, or starved out of existence in the blink of a few short years. The Southern Americas and parts of Canada had survived, albeit torn asunder into a series of islands connected by bridges and tunnels. Even twelve years later, fires still blazed and pillowed their thick, black smoke into the polluted sky. There existed no heaven, no hell, but this odd sense of limbo as progress continued to falter around the remaining world.

A big welcome to Fantasy and Paranormal Romance author Rae Z. Ryans!

Picture
Rae Z. Ryans, also known as Heather Capewell, currently resides in Tumbleweed, Alabama, with her family and belongs to the Romance Writers of America. She has lived all over the east coast and was born in Fairbanks, Alaska. Published since the age of fourteen, Rae enjoys writing romantic, erotic, fantasy/paranormal stories and poetry. Her name pays homage to her brothers: Specialist Ryan D. Rexon and Zachary U. Berthot.

Who/what inspired you to start writing?

I began writing at a young age, and the inspiration back then remains the same today. Life inspires me; photographs, music, and even art all inspire me to write too. What inspired my most recent story? A documentary on the trafficking of women.

Tell us a bit about your current work in progress, Beyond the Brothel Walls: Constricted. What was your inspiration for this piece?

Constricted, as well as the remaining series, is a blend of dark steamy paranormal romance and dystopian steampunk. It’s a world where humanity no longer exists and the world has sundered until only 1/4 remains inhabitable. Instead of humans, demons, their offspring, and witches and warlocks rule the lands of Arcadia, Delphia, and Garland. The plot itself goes beyond the characters mentioned below, but I want readers to experience the mystery and unfold the world for themselves. Keys and the number seven will play a role in each of the five books planned for the saga/series. There might be more, but we’ll see.

It’s a love story and it’s not.

It’s about the Books of Enoch and Revelation and then again it’s not.

I tend to write my own mythology, borrowing here and there, but I’m not a rewriter of old stories or myths. There is nothing wrong with that style, but it is not mine. In Constricted, you will see demons and a few demons that are not exactly evil, but their blood is mixed with demons.

*Wink* You’ll see as you enter the world roughly 12 years after the final sundering.

Constricted follows a courtesan, who has spent the majority of her life in a brothel, but finds herself, sold to a mystery man from Arcadia. The mystery man is a cursed, former human who became a vampire when he lied for his brother, and his brother transformed into a demonic horse for crimes committed against a warlock’s daughter three hundred years ago. Neither man can escape life until they break the curse with the blood and love of a pure virgin.

Korrigan has the greatest journey as she learns all she knew of the world was a lie. Here we meet a young woman (18) who cannot read, write, and has never tasted bread or sweets. All she knows comes from the conversations of the brothel and from what Jules allowed her to learn. The story delves deeper and into some darker moments as she learns the abuses she faced were crimes, but readers can watch as she faces those moments, and watch as she grows past the binds of her oppressive upbringing.

Inspiration came from various sources but with a sundered world, I found myself immersed in steampunk culture, primarily anything powered by steam or bio-fuel. In this world, there is little oil, even less coal, and the technology all but reverts to the 1800’s. From steam engines to steam boats and from bio-fueled homes to bio-fueled cars, the world has changed drastically even for the demons who remained behind.

Old technology becomes new as the countries race against each other for advancements. I sprinkled in some other elements here and there, but I’m hesitant to call it steampunk since the story isn’t so much the world as it is the struggles my characters face.

I have a pinterest board that highlight pieces I found inspiring or that reminded me of the story. http://www.pinterest.com/raezryans/constricted/

Did you find any scene or character difficult to write and if so how did you get through it?

There were a few dark moments that I almost cut and many more that caused bouts of crying. Writing Constricted brought pieces of my own past to life. She’s an abused woman who learns that the abuse she faced was illegal even though she had believed there was no other choice but to submit. Kori doesn’t expect others to understand or agree with her decisions, but she felt it was either brothel life or starvation. Even then, Korrigan tends to blame herself and follows the struggle most victims face while the plot itself evolves.

I made it through those scenes by becoming like Korrigan. I had to push her beyond the limits, but each time she came out stronger, and so did I. In the end, the scenes stayed at the requests of the beta readers, and I trust their opinions.

Have you started on book 2 in this series, Altered? Do you have an anticipated release date for it?

I am half way through writing Altered, which brings in two new characters, Cain and Dorian, The Fourth Horseman of the Apocalypse (Death). The cast of Constricted makes a cameo in this story as it pushes the world forward and the keys are explained.

A tiny spoiler, Cain is Korrigan’s brother.

Anticipated release is sometime next year. So much goes into creating a book and even more will depend on when I wrap up the story, but there are at least five estimated books planned right now for Beyond the Brothel Walls.

This isn’t your first gig: tell us about your writing journey from your first published work (Granny is a Werewolf) to your Nine Realms series (Chivalry and Malevolence) and now the soon to be released Constricted.

Granny is a Werewolf was a story I wrote for my kids the year my grandmother died. She had passed away at Thanksgiving and there wasn’t enough money in her policy to bury her. Christmas was tight and I wrote the short story in two weeks. I used to have it free on smashwords, but have taken it down for new editing, formatting, and all that jazz. When I released it, I had no idea what I was doing. This summer I plan to revamp and bring the story back, keeping the free price tag.

There is a free short story available on smashwords titled, Claws of Insanity. It’s a twist on cats versus dogs and allowed me to switch up my usual style. The classic damsel in distress scenario plays out in a strange and bizarre way.

Nine Realms is a massive series that spans multiple Norse worlds and creates series within series. So far I have Midgard and Alfheim mapped out, but there are actually seven other worlds I pull lore from too. Much like Beyond the Brothel Walls, it is a theological system inspired but not copied from the Norse Mythology. Loki even plays the good guy *wink* sort of *wink*.

Chivalry and Malevolence takes place in Alfheim and is the first novella in the series. It’s a clean high fantasy romance where a young Unseelie Princess (Mori) rescues a human knight (Sir Thomas) who wanders into their land. By doing so, she breaks her marriage treaty to a dragon Prince and is hunted by her mother the Queen.

The first book of the Midgard series also releases this year and features the great grandchild of the Princess. Instead of high fantasy, the Midgard series is a blend of high fantasy and erotic paranormal romance.

Is there anything particular you want readers to take away from your books?

Themes vary in my books so I’ll generalize the advice I always give instead.

Never change who you are for anyone but you.

Stand up for what you believe in and shout at the top of your lungs, even if you think no one will hear you. You just might inspire someone else to join you.

How do you balance your writing time with family, editing, and blogging (Literary Sweets)?

I invented this nifty cloning device … I wish. The short answer, I don’t. All I can do is plan and take a day at a time. Long ago I learned not to sweat it when the world implodes and backwards day begins. With three children and seven pets, someone always tests the boundaries of my patience.

It’s tough, but I’m lucky enough to work primarily from home, and my husband also works from home. There are days were I have all my wits and everything is on schedule, and there are days where I can’t seem to remember to eat let alone to put a post up on the blog. I rely heavily on reminder alerts and calendars. Without them, I wouldn’t remember to feed anyone.

What’s your writing process like?

I’m a cross between a planner and a panster. Ideas spark and I write them down, map out little details, and build my world on paper. My writing cave is home to notebooks and binders for each world I’ve created because I wouldn’t remember which world I’m writing in without them.

Characters go through a dumping period where I literally write out their life stories as mini/flash fiction pieces. Each character also receives a nifty profile sheet where I jot down hair/eye color and any other physical features or quirks.

I do all of that before I write anything else, but I’ll be the first to tell another writer to do what works for them. Oh and copious amounts of coffee and Nerds make an appearance during writing sprints and outlining.

Do you have a specific playlist when you are writing?

It depends on the story. Each series, and sometimes book, receives its own playlist. Constricted features a blend of punk, pop, and various other genres and it seems to fit the hodge podge world.

"Lost and Found" is a duet I found between Leona Lewis and OneRepublic’s lead man Ryan Tedder. To me the song is essentially a theme song for Korrigan and Petre. Leona Lewis – Lost Then Found

Are there any authors that have influenced you in your writing?

Every book I read influences me in one way or another. It’s hard to pin point just a few without leaving any out, but it’s no secret that Richard A. Knaak is my all time favorite fantasy author. I’m his biggest fan girl and even had a chance to interview him. As a Warcraft and World of Warcraft fan, I fell in love with his stories and writing style. Nowadays I recommend his books to anyone venturing into high fantasy whether as a genre or as a writer. The romanticism has a perfect balance with the world and story line and he nails it for me every time. Dragonrealm is one of my favorites to this day and it greatly inspired my dragons in Chivalry and Malevolence.

Why Indie publish?

I like to control all aspects of my projects and my books fall into obscure genres. The process is humbling, terrifying, and exciting, but I also enjoy keeping more of my money. There’s nothing wrong with going the traditional route, but I write for my fans and the stories I want to share.

The second reason comes from a reading/editing standpoint. The unique one of a kind stories come from indie and small press more than traditional houses. I don’t blame them; they want what sells. The problem is the readers aren’t consulted.

On the Indie level, we’re in the trenches with our fans. I can ask them what they want, spin it in my style, and deliver the story they want to read. The traditional author can do the same, but they have to find someone to pick the story up first, and unless you have a known name, they’re less likely to take a chance.

Nowadays authors are getting around those rules by self-publishing those stories, which I commend. Indie and self-publishing has a stigma amongst ourselves and we need to break the mold. I think we should write for the audience and fans, not only the trends.

Do you have a favorite step in the indie publishing process (cover art, writing, editing, promoting)?

Writing and editing are two of my favorite parts of the indie publishing process, but I don’t like to edit my own work. I love editing for other authors, especially those just beginning on their journey as I can help develop their craft. I do clean-up my own manuscripts, make changes from betas and critiques, but I don’t self edit prior to publication even though I am an editor. This was a lesson I learned the hard way.

Writing is one of those things I will do no matter who reads or doesn’t read my work. I can’t not write just like I can’t not breathe. On the rare days where I can’t or try taking a break, I feel as if I will explode.

Cover art is a fun experience, but I don’t make my own. My husband runs Raven Tree Design and makes my covers after reading my books. He’s also my sounding board and while not a writer, he listens and offers me advice.

What advice do you have for aspiring authors?

I’m sure I’ve stolen these rules from someone, but this is what I offer for advice:

·         If you don’t have time to read, you don’t have time to write.

·         Write the story inside of you, not the story you think your audience wants.

·         Don’t force your story into a genre mold. The words come out forced and full             of awkward tension.

·         Just write. One word, one sentence, one paragraph, one page, or one chapter is           more than you had yesterday.

Red's Randomness

Picture
I can’t resist, tell me about your crush on Tom Hiddleston and how it started?

It started when I watched Thor. Most women might have swooned over the lead, but I found myself drawn to Loki. Keep in mind I had already written my own Loki in the Nine realms series, but the emotions Tom drew from me while watching created inspiration on a new level.

Then I watched the interviews and got my hands on everything he’s ever created. Hooked is an understatement, I became obsessed. Tom Hiddleston is an excellent actor, but he’s a sweetheart too. Granted, you can always catch him eyeing woman’s breasts too. It’s funny and crude but it also shows the sexual side we may not see on film.

If you had to be one of your characters from your books – who would you choose? Why?

Korrigan and not because I know how her story pans out. She’s a tough cookie and has not only survived, but she rises above those who would see her fall. It’s not a magical power but her love and compassion for the innocent that sets her apart from all the other characters. Korrigan is the type of woman who would sacrifice her own freedom all over again to save a stranger.

Favorite TV or book character growing up?

Laura Ingalls Wilder is still my all time favorite character. I have reread her books to the point where I had to keep buying new copies and now I can share her adventures with my children. Thank goodness for e-readers!

I’m not much of a television person and really I never was as a child/teen either. I do enjoy a good movie, but the one television show I watched and still rewatch is … Little House on the Prairie. My husband made fun of me when we were dating because I would cancel dates during marathons on the Hallmark Channel.

Favorite hobby that isn’t reading or writing?

I make jewelry based on books I write or read and donate them to charity auctions or events. I’ve also been known to read an ARC, design a piece, and then contact the author offering the piece for their readers. Of course I also give them away to my fans, friends, and family too.

The Lioness: A True Love Tale by Jake Bonsignore

When you're meant for each other
you don't fall, you rise...

Picture
Cover Art: Phatpuppy Studios
Genre: Young Adult Romance

Seventeen-year-old Adria Catarr is a carefree, stubborn girl with an insatiable sweet tooth. When she stumbles into Lando Cardé, the incognito prince, during the annual Midsummer Festival and mistakes his charm for love at first sight, her naïve heart is quickly broken.

Kaidan Sordell, a childhood friend, is there to pick up the pieces and help Adria mend her wounds. His affection for her has gone unnoticed for so long that he’s not sure if he’ll ever have the nerve to tell her how he truly feels.

With the last summer before adulthood upon them, Adria and Kaidan decide to seek out the Temple of the Red Mare. The legendary tales of it revealing a heart’s truest desire is too tempting for lovelorn Adria to pass up.

Will she realize, though, that what she’s looking for has been trekking beside her all along?

Excerpt:

He pulled his hand away while pointing in feigned interest at a nearby peddler--

Adria tightened her hold like a vise grip before he could move apart.

“Wow, I didn’t even see that, Kai,” she exclaimed. Without even thinking, she whirled around and embraced him in a generous hug. She pressed her head against his shoulder and crushed his back as tightly as she could.

Uh oh. “Huh?” He was still standing in mirthful shock when she darted toward the merchant. Even then, she did not let go of his hand. By Áine, she smells so nice.

“Don’t you see all those yummies he’s selling? Look at all those chocolate truffles and the gourmet cookies on the left and—ah, Kaidan! Kaidan!” The last syllable of his name dragged on melodically as she grabbed his shoulder and shook him wildly. Any passerby would think that she was trying to resuscitate the dead or break him out of a hypnotic trance. “He has cheesecake. Cheesecake, Kaidan! Do you know how—ah! Kaidan, it’s caramel too! Trust me; I know my desserts.” She glared at him suspiciously. “Don’t judge me, Kai. They’re really, really good! By the way, did I mention that he has cheesecake?”

“I, uh, okay.” He did not have to see Adria lick her lips hungrily to know her intentions. Without a doubt, she was already salivating over the confections. Bless her if she can handle it. We just ate, though.

“What do you want? Tell me, Kai. It’s my treat!”

He scratched his neck and squinted. “You don’t have to Adria. It’s okay.”

She grimaced. “Not happening, Kai. Pick one! Hurry!”

I knew that was coming. “Well, if you insist. There are so many choices to pick from.”

“I’ll count down from five.”

Geez! “Okay, um, how about some of those white chocolate candies? We can share them.”

She scrunched up her nose and shook her head. Got it, Kai. Caramel cheesecake for you, too, it is! Stay right here. I’ll be back in a flash!”

Adria squeezed his hand gently and ignored the comic disbelief across Kaidan’s face. He was still standing there in a daze when she skipped away toward the vendor. Soon, he would know why cheesecake was far too fine of a treat to pass up. Hardly anything could compare to it under any circumstance.

Kaidan watched her scamper off glumly. It only seemed fitting that clouds blanketed the darkening sky above. Still, he persisted on stretching his time with Adria as far as possible. Perhaps deep down, he knew that briefly enjoying her company was better than nothing at all.

I'm excited to be a blog stop today for Jake Bonsignore's The Lioness: A True Love Tale! Welcome Jake. Tell us a little bit about The Lioness.

The Lioness: A True Love Tale is a YA romance set in an alternate world I created with heavy European influences, namely French, Italian, and Celtic. There are no fantasy creatures or magic.

It can be read as a stand alone, but I am currently working on The Tigress: A True Life Tale, which will tell the story of Rylee Suroch, who happens to be a side character in The Lioness.

What inspired you to write The Lioness?

Most of my experience is in young adult, and I continuously heard this amazing song from Lunatica called “Song For You” that completely inspired me and gave me the idea for it. Throughout the course of the novel, I must’ve listened to the song about 7-8x a day.

Tell us about your characters Adria Catarr and Kaidan Sordell and how they came to be?

Adria Catarr is the protagonist of the novel. She is a cheerful, 17 year old girl who begins the novel being naïve and a bit ignorant, but definitely grows and learns to figuratively open her eyes. She has an insatiable sweet tooth and thinks about eating all the time (she counters this by being a heavy runner and a girl who loves running). To her, life is there for enjoyment, and she’s determined to make the most of her last summer before adulthood.

Kaidan Sordell is the second protagonist of the novel. He is a 17 year old boy who is very shy and lacks self esteem. He has been Adria’s childhood friend and has adored her for so long in secret that he doesn’t think he’ll ever have the nerve to tell her how he feels. As the novel progresses, he finds the courage to pursue his dreams and to also make the most out of his youth while he still has it.

The characters came to be out of determination to write a romance that everyone can connect with. With true love is a journey being a motto, I wanted to have two characters that mirror every day people in some fashion, sans the common factors present in most other novels. I wanted to show that there’s more to a relationship than actual romance and it’s the ups and downs, gives and takes, that matter, and they just seemed to fit the bill perfectly.

Do your characters ever resemble people in your life?

My characters represent molds of people in real life and I hope to fit the build of all young men and women, their aspirations, secret fears, and heart of hearts.

How long did it take you to write the story and was there any particular research or experiences that played into the development of the piece?

I spent just about one year writing this novel. I work two jobs and so finding the time was super difficult, but I did do a lot of research for this novel in the form of investigating European customs, ways, architecture, and society, as the novel has heavy European influences. The Goddess in the novel, Áine, is based off of her Celtic counterpart, and so I weaved some mythology into the tale.

You also have your Inferno Unleashed series (Empyreal Illusions and Awakening the Fire). How do you balance your writing time for the different books?

Thankfully, Empyreal Illusions & Awakening the Fire were done by the time I began The Lioness. Finding the time to do all three was not simple, but I’m happy to say that I can focus on marketing those and working solely on my new one, The Tigress, now.

Did you have the same audience in mind for this new book as you did for the Inferno Unleashed series?

The target audience of The Lioness are teenagers and young adults, particularly 14+ females. However, I—and a few reviews—are of the impression that this is a novel even many adults will find value out of, as it hits home the theme of when you’re meant for each other, you don’t fall [in love]. You rise.

Do you consider yourself a more character-driven or plot-driven writer?

I consider myself a mix of both. All my novels have deep storylines with many, many themes and greater philosophical meaning behind them, but I also try to flesh out the main characters in a way that makes them very, very dependable. It’s honestly hard to say.

What has been the most difficult part about this journey/what has been the most positive part?

The most difficult part of this journey has been finding the time to write, market, promote, and support others while balancing two jobs and a life outside of same. I literally sleep 4 hours a day, maybe 5 on a good evening. The most positive part is seeing the reaction of the readers, hearing that I’ve inspired them to write or alter their life in some way, shape, or form, and just seeing them impacted by the novels I write and their themes.

What’s your writing process like?

I try to wake up super early to get some writing in because I am usually strapped for time. Lately, though, I end up doing it in the evening with an energy drink. I either have good, loud music blasting or an anime video on the left side of the screen while I write on the right. For me, it’s much easier to write with music on as it distracts me just enough to not fall asleep (b/c I’m usually so sleepy from work).

Are there any books or authors that have influenced you in your writing? What are you reading right now?

The authors who have influenced my writing the most are Brandon Sanderson, Tad Williams, Mercedes Lackey, and Robert Jordan (RIP). They are some of my favorite authors and I aspired to be as great in worldbuilding, plot creating, and character description as they are. Right now, I am reading Simon Green’s Once in a Blue Moon.

What can your readers look forward to next?

Readers can look forward to The Tigress: A True Life Tale next. It tells the story of Rylee Suroch, a side character in The Lioness.

What advice do you have for aspiring authors?

Don’t ever give up. Ever. Aside from that, remember that all authors are people just as you are. They have feelings, opinions, and emotions. If you become very successful and a household name, don’t look down upon others because of your status. Most importantly, treat others as you would want to be treated yourself. It’s never, ever, ever okay to attack, slander, libel, spread rumors against, bash, or condescend another author, blogger, editor, graphic designer, formatter, reader, or anyone under any circumstance. Don’t play into those games; it’s just not cool and not worth it. Ever.

Red's Randomness:

You’re stranded on an island – which author would you like with you?

I’d probably go with someone like Tad Williams or Patrick Rothfuss. They both make pretty crafty characters and amazing stories, and all that imagination has to be able to go for something big in terms of survival and rescue.

If you had to be one of your characters from your books – who would you choose? Why?

If I had to be a character from one of my stories, I’d definitely go with Ophion of Samsara (Awakening the Fire: Book II of The Inferno Unlesahed). He is a hydromancer, thus having the ability to use water magic, and is very charismatic and somewhat arrogant. He has it pretty good and has just enough problems to keep him on his toes, and I’m told I already modeled him a bit after myself.

Favorite TV or book character growing up?

Growing up, my favorite TV character was doubtlessly Yusuke Urameshi of the divine anime, Yu Yu Hakusho. My favorite book character was and remains Kellen Tavadon of The Outstretched Shadow.

Favorite hobby that isn’t reading or writing?

Relaxing with video games or working out at the gym.

Thanks Jake!

A big welcome to fantasy author, Tara Maya. Here's an excerpt from Initiate, the first book in her young adult epic fantasy series, The Unfinished Song. Initiate is free on most sites - please see the link below!

Description:

DEADLY INITIATION

A DETERMINED GIRL...

Dindi can't do anything right, maybe because she spends more time dancing with pixies than doing her chores. Her clan hopes to marry her off and settle her down, but she dreams of becoming a Tavaedi, one of the powerful warrior-dancers whose secret magics are revealed only to those who pass a mysterious Test during the Initiation ceremony. The problem? No-one in Dindi's clan has ever passed the Test. Her grandmother died trying. But Dindi has a plan.

AN EXILED WARRIOR...

Kavio is the most powerful warrior-dancer in Faearth, but when he is exiled from the tribehold for a crime he didn't commit, he decides to shed his old life. If roving cannibals and hexers don't kill him first, this is his chance to escape the shadow of his father's wars and his mother's curse. But when he rescues a young Initiate girl, he finds himself drawn into as deadly a plot as any he left behind. He must decide whether to walk away or fight for her... assuming she would even accept the help of an exile.

Excerpt:

Blue-skinned rusalki grappled Dindi under the churning surface of the river. She could feel their claws dig into her arms. Their riverweed-like hair entangled her legs when she tried to kick back to the surface. She only managed to gulp a few breaths of air before they pulled her under again.

She hadn't appreciated how fast and deep the river was. On her second gasp for air, she saw that the current was already dragging her out of sight of the screaming girls on the bank. A whirlpool of froth and fae roiled between two large rocks in the middle of the river. The rusalka and her sisters tugged Dindi toward it. Other water fae joined the rusalki. Long snouted pookas, turtle-like kappas and hairy-armed gwyllions all swam around her, leading her to the whirlpool, where even more fae swirled in the whitewater.

"Join our circle, Dindi!" the fae voices gurgled under the water. "Dance with us forever!"

"No!" She kicked and swam and stole another gasp for air before they snagged her again. There were so many of them now, all pulling her down, all singing to the tune of the rushing river. She tried to shout, "Dispel!" but swallowed water instead. Her head hit a rock, disorienting her. She sank, this time sure she wouldn't be coming up again.

"Dispel!" It was a man's voice.

Strong arms encircled her and lifted her until her arms and head broke the surface. Her rescuer swam with her toward the shore. He overpowered the current, he shrugged aside the hands of the water faeries stroking his hair and arms. When he reached the shallows, he scooped Dindi into his arms and carried her the rest of the way to the grassy bank. He set her down gently.

She coughed out some water while he supported her back.

"Better?" he asked.

She nodded. He was young--only a few years older than she. The aura of confidence and competence he radiated made him seem older. Without knowing quite why, she was certain he was a Tavaedi.

"Good." He had a gorgeous smile. A wisp of his dark bangs dangled over one eye. He brushed his dripping hair back over his head.

Dindi's hand touched skin--he was not wearing any shirt. Both of them were sopping wet. On him, that meant trickles of water coursed over a bedrock of muscle. As for her, the thin white wrap clung transparently to her body like a wet leaf. She blushed.

"It might have been easier to swim if you had let go of that," he teased. He touched her hand, which was closed around something. "What were you holding onto so tightly that it mattered more than drowning?"

About the Author:

Tara Maya has lived in Africa, Europe and Asia. She’s pounded sorghum with mortar and pestle in a little clay village where the jungle meets the desert, meditated in a Buddhist monastery in the Himalayas and sailed the Volga river to a secret city that was once the heart of the Soviet space program. This first-hand experience, as well as research into the strange and piquant histories of lost civilizations, inspires her writing. Her terrible housekeeping, however, is entirely the fault of pixies.
